Learning from a Non-Traditional Approach: Selfies!

 

Do you realize that for as long as there have been cameras, there have been selfies?  The Millennials think that they invented the “selfie”; however, selfies have been around longer than the Millennials’ great, great, great, great-grandparents!  Here is what is thought to be the first recorded selfie.  Meet Robert Cornelius in October 1839.  Per the Library of Congress, they believe that Robert stood there between 3-15 minutes in order to “snap” this photograph.

Have you ever sat down with a potential new customer and had no clue about him/her? How are you going to fill your lunch hour and actually make a sale with this person when the only thing you can visibly see that you have in common is that you both have hair on your head? In some cases, you don’t even have that in common! If you can get through the first five to ten minutes flying conversation solo, have no fear – the French fries you just ordered will be coming shortly to act as your wingman. Mom’s Dating Advice Turned E-Mail Marketing Tips

E-Mail Marketing – it is what I do all day, every day, so it is common for people to ask my expertise on design tips, deliver tips, content tips, etc, and I am more than happy to share.  Sometimes my advice stems from personal/professional experiences, sometimes articles from “the experts”, and sometimes I have to “trust my gut”.  So as I found myself telling my daughter the advice to “Trust her Gut and Follow Her Heart” (even though she is 6, it’s never too early to start) my mom’s voice was resonating in my head much to my surprise of “Oh my Gosh, I am sounding like my Mom”!  I am happily married, so fortunately, I have not had to hear or employ any of these tips in several years; but she told me these so many times, I don’t have to reach too far into the memory bank to pull them out.  I am sure...

Boca Raton, FL — November 14, 2012 — E-proDirect, a trusted expert & leader in email marketing solutions for the meetings and convention segments of the hospitality industry, recently conducted a survey to determine meeting planner trends, preferences, and overall insight into what’s on the minds of Meeting Planners for 2013.
The survey of more than 1,100 Meeting Planners from all market segments was conducted in September 2012 and included several topics that will affect meeting suppliers and their marketing strategies in 2013.
A few response highlights:

  • Results show that while online event management software is being used by 14.4% of respondents, contacting a hotel directly is still the preferred method of submitting an RFP for 70.1% of the planners surveyed.
  • Group booking windows are also beginning to extend. For example, 52.8% of respondents, including a majority of Corporate Meeting Planners are averaging a 3-6...

As I am sitting on a plane coming back from an industry event, I can’t help but notice Bon Jovi songs keep blaring in my ears and I begin to wonder if I have downloaded every single song of theirs over the years.  As I am reading the titles of the songs that occupy valuable storage space in my iPod, I start to see several parallel themes between his songs and the meeting industry.
 
“Bed of Roses” – I’ll admit, if a planner resides to her/his room, and there is a bed of roses from the sales person, that would be awkward!  However, think about it.  How awesome would it be for a hotel sales person to go the extra mile in doing something unique in his/her room for the planner that is there for a site?  On the flip side, how great would it be for the planner to leave unique, personal in-room amenities...
